The house, a rarity, is one of only a handful of remaining manors in the country was the great seat of Sir Henry Fermor, built in 1520-1530 and designed with a palatial facade to impress the visitor, the approach through the gatehouse, of the same date, still provides a memorable impression of the rising status of a Tudor family well connected in Norfolk and at Court.

Steeped in history and reputed that Henry VIII stayed at Wolterton Manor House and walked barefoot from there to the nearby shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham.

This magnificent and unique property has features characteristics of the period heraldic decoration with Sir Henry Fermor’s coat of arms on the gatehouse and the pre-1527 royal coat of arms over the front porch.

The house has descended from the Famous family to the Calthorpes in 1628 and in 1720 to the L’Estranges and then to the Astleys. In the 18th Century the west wing of the house became a semi-ruin and attracted numerous artists and antiquaries including Cotman and Pugin.

The picturesque Georgian town of Holt is approximately 9 miles distant and provides an excellent range of shops, the area has good schools with Beeston Hall preparatory school nearby at West Runton.
